I.H.O.S. Chats With… Young Steezie
So in anticipation of our inaugural party this Wednesday at Shore Bar, we wanted to give you all a chance to get to know the four DJs in our line-up. First up is the newest face on the scene, Young Steezie and her house and nu disco affinities that definitely grabbed our attention. In a field that is male-dominated it is always great to see a female diving into the DJ pool. Keep an eye out for her because we predict some pretty big moves from her this year. And that stage name is definitely memorable! So get acquainted with her and our short interview and come check out her sounds in person this Wednesday.
Check out the full interview after the jump!
IHOS: What drew you to the name Young Steezie?
YS: Well, my friend started calling me “Steez” a couple years ago during a debauchery filled Coachella and it just kind of stuck. When I decided to give Djing a whirl and was in need of a name, I wanted to incorporate Steez somehow. I had Young Jeezy on the brain (naturally) and just decided to do a play on that. Every time I say “Young Steezie” in my head I use Young Jeezy voice BTW.
IHOS: Are you originally from L.A? What makes you call this city home?
YS: I was born and raised in Napa and spent a few years in San Francisco before I made my way down south. Los Angeles definitely feels like home now though! I have a great group of friends here and am constantly inspired and motivated by the music scene so both those things definitely help.

IHOS: You’re relatively new to the scene, and it never hurts to have more females hitting the turntables! What got you into making music?
YS: I’ve always been a music lover but never really considered making it or DJing until recently. My boyfriend and our group of friends are all DJs and producers so after a while I decided to try my hand at it and see what all that noise was about. So I went out and bought myself an S4, downloaded Traktor and was addicted immediately. I’ve also recently dipped my toe into the production waters a bit- which is both exciting and terrifying.
IHOS: Who do you look up to when it comes to music? What genres appeal to you the most?
YS: Wow, that’s a tough one, there are so many! I’d say Stevie Nicks is my all time music idol. I think she is the ultimate HBIC (head bitch in charge) and I totally admire and respect her. My favorite genres are definitely house and nu disco. My taste definitely runs the gamut though; Jimmy Edgar, Anna Lunoe, Tourist and Giraffage all have different styles but I’m obsessed with each equally at the moment.
IHOS: Give us 5 words that describe your sound.
YS: Fun, emotive and sometimes weird

IHOS: Any exciting projects in the works?
YS: I recently collaborated on a bootleg of James Vincent McMorrow’s “Cavalier” which we’ll be dropping any day now 🙂
IHOS: And finally, what are three hot spots that you hit up most weekends?
YS: Oh geez, um my bed? Haha. If I’m down to get down I generally follow the music which seems to take me to the Private Label parties at Lure, Sound occasionally and the Lights Down Low parties. Oh, and A Club Called Rhonda, can’t really go wrong there 🙂
