Doc Daneeka Feat. Seven Davis Jr. – “What’s It Gonna Be?”

Ten Thousand Yen label co-runner Doc Daneeka‘s been producing whatever the hell he feels like for half the decade. Luckily for us, his whims usually translate to tasteful dancefloor fillers that move fluidly among throwback disco, leftfield house, and no-frills UK bass. Although his releases always demonstrate from his love for weighty grooves and space-funk programming, Doc Daneeka’s releases are unpredictable and chameleonic. His most recent release, the Mine to Mistress EP, turns away from the bizarre and instead showcases Daneeka’s sedate, measured takes on disco-inflected house. On the title track, vocalist Seven Davis Jr.’s husky take might suggest or reflect Daneeka’s restless, varied approach to producing music–“You keep going round and round/You keep going back and forth/Make up your mind.” As a vocal house track it might not represent the producer at his most inventive, but his characteristic skill with machines and unhurried confidence shine through.
