Brian Gros – “Miss You!” EP

Brian Gros

The high volume of minimal techno releases that Berlin label minus has been putting out recently wouldn’t be so noteworthy if their quality weren’t so high. Today minus previewed the fresh “Miss You!” EP from Argentina’s Brian Gros, eight minutes of churning techno and deep house broken into four parts. These simple, pulsing grooves are almost invariably offset by off-kilter mechanical melodies and textures. In opener “Fuck,” a steady house beat balances an oscillating, panning synth strain. Title track “Miss You!” also features an understated house beat, this time pinned by an ascending siren wail that evaporates before it peaks. Much of Gros’ release seems made in this way, intentionally referencing and then avoiding or remolding rave tropes, while the release’s second half showcases simpler melodies and ideas. If minimal is your thing it’s a fun listen: the tracks are energetic, subdued, and possess enough leftfield elements to engage over repeated listens.
