Shigeto X Kyson – “Water Collides”

shigeto

Shigeto and Kyson team up for Friends of Friends, a Los Angeles-based music label whose roster of artists include Groundislava, Daedelus, and Shlohmo. In celebration of five years of awesome music, Friends of Friends has released a compilation (aptly titled 5 years of Friends of Friends, or 5oFoF) that showcases its roster’s classic tracks alongside b-sides, rarities, among other brand new sounds.

“Water Collides” is an aquatic, churning contribution from Shigeto and Kyson. The two artists typically complement each other’s strengths, and in this production they each provide what the other lacks. Shigeto’s love for layered, naturalist textures is certainly present, but his tendency to aimlessly drift on ambience has been reigned in by Kyson, who shares Shigeto’s pastel-colored production aesthetic yet uses rhythm and song structure more decisively. Shigeto’s hand keeps things spacey and dreamy, but Kyson’s rhythmic and structural presence on the track set the production apart.
