FaltyDL – “Heart & Soul”

A few days ago Brooklyn-based FaltyDL released this soulful track in anticipation of his album In the Wild, out today on Ninja Tune. This track’s structure is particularly engaging, both circular and linear. Drums alternate between ambling acoustic patterns and more rigorous jungle breakbeats, an otherwise anxious listen if not for a wistful female vocal (“Open up my heart and soul, how I adore you,”) that drifts throughout and between these sections. That this song frequently shifts between  styles—sometimes eschewing rhythm altogether—and still feels laidback, subtle, and holistic, shows FaltyDL’s strong emotional attunement. You can stream the rest of his excellent album at the New York Times, and then press replay.
